Loading... Please wait...Every Alaskan king crab season, brother Andy and Johnathan Hillstrand risk their lives and seek fortunes upon the treacherous waters of the Bering Sea. Sons of a hard-bitten, highly successful fisherman, and born with brine in their blood, the Hillstrand boys couldn't imagine a life without a swaying deck underfoot and a harvest of mighty king crabs waiting to be pulled from the ocean floor. In pursuit of their daily catch, the brothers brave ice floes and heavy waves sixty feet high, the perils of thousand-pound steel traps thrown about by the punishing wind, and the constant menace of the open, hungry water--epitomized in the chorus of a haunting sailor's sing-along: "Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep, so beware, beware."
Their first-person accounts matter-of-factly explain what it's like to constantly face death on the Bering Sea and what it does to your life back on land."

I'm a girly girl and have never watched Deadliest Catch but will start watching after reading this amazing book. Not to insult anyone but I actually bought it at a yard sale brand new for 1.00. I started reading it later that night and could not put it down. Simply amazing what you guys have done and do today. I will be buying the pervious seasons of this show and for what it is worth you have a new fan. Best wishes

The book finally arrived by mail on friday... Took it out of the box and started reading and didn't put it down until I was finished!
Chapeau (hat off) I really cannot believe people can and will work in such conditions in this day and age. I could probably get very seasick just watching what goes on BEHIND the captains and the crew on deck.....
Now that you have our attention - how about soem more?

if you watch the show, you think you have a grasp on bering sea crab fishing, and you do...vaguely. this book tells you a lot of what you don't know, all from the perspective of andy and jonathan. they've always been my favorites because they're the nice guys, but you really get to know them and their story as they share about the more discrete parts of their lives. it's heartbreaking, inspiring, humbling, and enlightening. felt like i was friends with the guys by the end.
also, it literally had me laughing out loud on the train. i want to raise my kids in alaska too, just for the adventure of it all.

I LOVED reading about the guys. It made you feel like you saw a different side of them. They are by far my favorite captains
